"We enjoyed seeing our daughter develop independence and grow with the support of her Xcite Steps social mentoring coach"-AnonymousSan Diego, CA
The Xcite Steps Adult Coaching service is a one-on-one coaching service designed for young adults with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities that need supportive services to reach their academic and professional goals as they transition into active, healthy adulthood.
With this service, each client is paired with a positive, proactive Life Skills Coach that will guide them toward accomplishing their personal goals through social exposure, skill building, and personal enrichment. Xcite Steps Adults staffs design an individualized program for each client, depending on their needs, skills, and interests.
Coaching sessions take place in the home, the local community, and on college campuses.
Upon entering the program, participants will be interviewed to better understand their personal goals and interests as well as current needs and challenges. These personal goals will be outlined in an individual’s Service Plan. Goals and outcomes will be organized within the following areas: social/emotional development, vocational development, and self-management skills. The private pay coaching program can also integrate elements of our Home Skills program, such as meal planning, shopping, and cooking.
Program staff will set benchmarks for these goals and help identify structured activities with each client.
Private pay Adult Coaching services require a minimum of 6 coaching hours per week, broken up into 2 sessions per week. These sessions can be extended, but there is a 6 hour minimum to all new coaching services in the first six months.
We also require that clients are willing participants and that they can commit to 2 sessions per week for at least 6 months.
A typical session includes daily check-ins with agenda setting, vocational training and experience (through volunteering and interning), community engagement activities, organizational support in academic environments, and recreation/fitness. Two sessions are scheduled out for each week, and clients work with their coach for duration of 6-12 months and beyond.
Participants in the Adult Coaching program may also have the opportunity to work in “clusters” with other peers and coaches in the Xcite community. These cluster groups help introduce clients to like-minded young adults, enhancing their social skills practicum while working on similar goals with that of their peers.
It is Xcite Steps Adults’ philosophy that peer-to-peer interaction enables clients to learn from each other, gain perspective about the ambitions and capabilities of people their age, and increase motivation through positive peer support.
Adults aged 18-35 living in San Diego County. Coaching Services best serve individuals who are developing skills and/or maintenance in the areas of employment, volunteer placement, post-secondary education support, and/or community integration.
Clients must demonstrate the ability and motivation to achieve greater independence in several skill areas. They must also demonstrate an understanding of their goals and be able to contribute to the goal writing process, complete self-evaluations, and help drive their own program agenda.
Xcite Steps seeks to work with families/guardians that will allow for independence skills to be utilized at home and in the community.
Xcite Steps Adults coaches can support an adult who may need assistance with navigating a campus, course selection and career exploration, organizational and time management skills, accessing campus services and supports, and social skills development. This service option is designed for young adults who are interested in pursuing post-secondary education, training, and enrichment courses.
Coaches cannot be utilized as classroom aids, and they are not academic tutors. Coaches can attend courses during a portion of sessions, and coaches can help clients locate tutoring services on and off campus.
